​​IES is primarily engaged as a turn key geophysics contract company. We also subcontract and partner with large national and international geophysics companies, work as 'in house' crews and we often train Client and Government employees how to properly conduct ground magnetic surveys for themselves.
IES has conducted ground magnetic investigations of all types in over a dozen countries. We have worked with start-ups and junior explorers to major mining companies.​​


Magnetics are used to discover and evaluate the size and shape of ore bodies by mapping the magnetism of underlying rocks.

  • Iron Ore: The most common magnetic minerals found are pyrrhotite, (iron sulphide), and magnetite. Magnetite, when found with sufficient purity and quantity, may become an iron ore deposit.

  • Gold: Pyrrhotite is important because of associated including pyrite, an iron sulphide mineral which may contain gold. Magnetics map large- and local-scale structure (faults, dykes, and shear zones).

  • Copper / Zinc / Nickel: Other valuable minerals associated with pyrrhotite include; chalcopyrite (copper sulphide), sphalerite (zinc sulphide), and pentlandite (nickel sulphide).

  • Diamonds: Magnetics are used to define the often circular and characteristic magnetic anomalies related to kimberlite occurrences.​

  • The magnetic method is used to explore for chromite, manganese and asbestos.  

Magnetics are used to determine depth to basement rocks and to locate and define the extent of sedimentary basins.


Magnetics are used to identify demagnetised rocks produced by the heat of geothermal activity; potential epithermal gold deposits.  


Magnetics are used to understand the general structure of underlying rock by identifying faults and folds otherwise hidden beneath the surface.  


IES uses GEM GSM-19 Overhauser Magnetometers. GEM’s GSM-19 Overhauser magnetometer is the standard in mineral exploration and has proven itself for its high sensitivity and absolute accuracy.

IES processes data in the field daily using a combination of proprietary software, Encom PA (Model Vision & QuickMag) and Geosoft Oasis Montaj (Mag Map). Encom PA gives us the ability to process, filter, grid, and map data from magnetic surveys in the field.
